Supporting Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing in the Age of AI
This project explores how young adults in the UK aged 18–25 years are using AI tools for mental health support and wellbeing. It is led by an Institute for Data and AI (IDAI) Collision Grant 2026 and co-led by Dorothy Butchard, Gianfranco Polizzi and Roxana Baiasu with a wider team at the University of Birmingham.

Our aims
- Explore benefits and risks of AI use for mental health and wellbeing
- Evaluate young people’s understanding of AI and digital literacy
- Assess current research and regulations linked to AI, mental health and wellbeing
- Develop evidence-based policy and practice guidance for safe, ethical AI use
Methods and approach
We are using a range of methods to explore AI use among young people:
- Review of current research in this area
- UK-wide survey of young people aged 18-25
- Consultation with the IMH’s Youth Advisory Group
- Focus group discussions
- Policy workshops with young people and organisations
