Improving wellbeing-focused online media literacy in schools

Alongside Dr Beth Bell and Dr Gill Francis from the University of York, Dr Gianfranco Polizzi from the University of Birmingham is currently working as a Co-Investigator on a project funded by the Nuffield Foundation. Titled “Improving wellbeing-focused online media literacy in schools”, this project began in July 2025 and runs until the end of 2026. The aim of this research is to explore the effectiveness of media literacy pedagogies and interventions on the wellbeing of secondary school students. This study employs a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, coupled with interviews – enhanced by the think-aloud method – with secondary school teachers. Partners supporting the project include the PSHE, Internet Matters, the National Literacy Trust, Pathfinder Teaching School Hub and Wise Kids. More information about the project can be found here.
